NYC Adventure - Day 5.2

Posted by JohnJohn under Uncategorized

The wonders of the iPhone came in handy this evening. All week we have been using the Google map feature to fin our way around NYC. Tonight Nicole was in the mood for a cheese-steak.

Have you seen the comercial on TV for the iPhone, the one where they are watching Pirates of the Caribian and the user become hungry for calamari? The user then logs into Google Maps and searches for the nearest restaurant serving calamari. Same thing for use, just looking for cheese-steaks. We find one near NYU & UnionSquare. It was called The CheeseSteak Factory, no they did not have CheeseCake. What a meal though! Holy crap!

After the meal we walked a block down to Union Square and saw all the jobless students protesting for this and against that, mostly W. Bush bashing. One such group had spent a lot time erecting a banner two car lengths long. It said “Bush was the mastermind behind 9/11″. They took shifts fumbling trough the use of a megaphone. Fun part was, the sign was facing the park, facing the others taking part in the rally. Again, we are in Union Square, Broadway and just South of Midtown…turning the sign around would have made much more sense. Thousands of people walk, ride and drive by that corner everyday. Makes me believe they weren’t really concerned about getting their message out, maybe just bored and needed something to grip about. Not very smart is you ask me.

City Sights Tour. Nicole and I both can highly recommend these tours. A double decker bus with and open air top. It’s a very nice way to see the city. Today’s tour took us through Midtown, Grenich Village, lower Manhattan and up trough the lower west side.

I took about a 2.5 mile walk tonight. Here is what I saw. Check out the first picture. It was posted in the window of a CVS Pharmacy on Lexington Ave. I thought it was Matt Lauer from the NBC Today Show, it’s the spitting image of him. I got a good chuckle.

New Beaver or Broad Beaver?

IMG_0099.JPGIMG_1998.JPGNicole and I got separated for about 30 minutes. I finally gave up and started looking for something at this corner. After having no luck, I walked down a block and she was standing right here…on this block, we headed back up on the subway.

<Sorry Nicole I could not resist this addition>

Trinity Church

Have you seen “National Treasure”? This is the Church featured in towards the end of the movie. No there really isn’t a Treasure underneath…that we know of… :)

Ground Zero

This place is sobering. The shear mass of the site over time could bring grown man to his knees. It is indescribable in text. I won’t attempt to continue.

Most of our time near Ground Zero was spent at St Paul’s Church. This church survived every great disaster that has ever accrued on the island of Manhattan. I think I remember hearing that is was the first building built on the island. George Washington worshiped in the church after his inauguration.
